Hollywood Now: Episodes, Girlfriend’s Guide & The Last Ship

The Final Episodes

When the showbiz-skewering comedy Episodes returns to Showtime for its fifth and final season August 20, Matt LeBlanc (playing a fictionalized version of himself) is hosting a wacky game show whille married British TV writers Sean (Stephen Mangan) and Beverly Lincoln (Tamsin Greig) are trying to get a new show off the ground. (Nobody is happy, but they’re hilarious in their misery). The Lincolns are an interfaith couple—she’s Jewish, he’s not—something that becomes a topic of discussion in the season’s first episode in a conversation between Beverly and her friend and jogging partner, ex-producer Carol Rance (Kathleen Rose Perkins). Greig herself has Jewish roots: Her grandfather was a Polish Jew.

Abby’s Complication = Abby’s Ex
On August 17, Lisa Edelstein returns for the fourth season of Bravo’s Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, which finds her character Abby starting a new website with her friend Barb (Retta), but things do not go smoothly. One complication: The actress they’ve hired to promote the site (Denise Richards), happens to be dating Abby’s ex-boyfriend Will (Warren Christie). Abby, who is Jewish on her mother’s side has had a series of men in her life since she split from her husband Jake (Paul Adelstein). Off screen, Edelstein, who is Jewish, has been married to artist Robert Russell, also Jewish, since 2014. Although she’s not religious, her wedding was “riddled with ritual,” including a chuppah (wedding canopy). “It was important to both of us,” she says. “To me, it’s like an invisible ribbon that binds me to the generations before me and the ones yet to come, like touching the past and the future simultaneously.”
Back in Action
TNT’s The Last Ship ended its third season with Captain Tom Chandler (Eric Dane) quitting the Navy after three years of fighting epidemics and coups to save the world, and as the new season begins August 20, he’s living with his family in a fishing village in Greece. Of course, a new crisis arises: The deadly Red Flu virus is now threatening the global food supply, and Chandler is called to action once more. Dane, who is Jewish, has been in an interfaith marriage to actress Rebecca Gayheart since 2004, and they’re parents to daughters Billie, 7, and Georgia, 5.
