Larry David Re-Appears
Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm has been MIA from HBO for nearly two years, to the dismay of fans of his idiosyncratic, Jewish-influenced comedy. There’s still no word whether or not David intends to make any more episodes, but he will make a brief, welcome return to HBO on August 10, starring in the movie Clear History as a character similar to his tactless, no-filter Curb persona: He’s always trying to fix his screw-ups and winds up making them worse.
We won’t spoil it by revealing the rather convoluted plot but we will tell you that the A-List cast is fabulous: Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton, Eva Mendes and two actors with partially Jewish roots: Kate Hudson and Liev Schreiber. Hudson, the daughter of Jewish actress Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson who is not Jewish, plays Hamm’s wife.
Schreiber, also the product of a Jewish mother and father who is not Jewish, is virtually unrecognizable in a long ponytail, beard and thick accent as a Chechen thug. Now winning raves as the titular “fixer” in Showtime’s Ray Donovan, Schreiber has two sons with actress Naomi Watts.
Chelsea Handler’s Surprising History
We recently mentioned Lisa Kudrow and the return of the genealogy series she produces, Who Do You Think You Are? and noted that Chelsea Handler (Chelsea Lately) would be the subject of the third episode, airing August 6. We’ve since gotten our hands on an advance screener of the episode, and it’s fascinating. “I’m proud to be a Jewish American,” announces Handler, who was raised in her father’s Jewish faith, but has always had questions about her maternal Christian grandparents’ German roots. Handler is shocked to learn that they had possible links to the Nazis when she discovers a wartime memoir by her grandmother and swastika-emblazoned workbook belonging to her grandfather.
Handler’s journey takes her to Germany, France and the site of an Iowa POW camp (where her captured grandfather was held) in search of the truth. It’s a riveting story, made all the more so because it’s true. Don’t miss this one!
Gilbert’s Engagement & Environmental Announcements
Jewish actress and The Talk host and producer Sara Gilbert has a lot to be excited about. Now that gay marriage is once again legal in California, she can marry her fiancée, musician/songwriter Linda Perry (not Jewish). She’s also celebrating the August 13 release of her book, The Imperfect Environmentalist.
As Talk viewers know, Gilbert is a vegan who lives a healthy lifestyle and does her best to raise her two children that way. She wrote the book as a lighthearted guide to easy, eco-friendly things you can do at home and work, and for your health, fitness, family and finances that will benefit your life and the planet. It’s available in recycled-paper trade paperback, or—even greener—e-book edition.
