An interfaith marriage is at the heart of The Wife, an excellent new drama starring Glenn Close and Jonathan Pryce. Opening August 17, it tells the story of patrician Joan Castleman (Close), a supportive spouse who has put her own dreams aside to foster the career of her husband Joe, a Jewish writer from Brooklyn, New York. He’s now about to receive the Novel Prize for Literature, and long-buried secrets emerge about the true nature of their relationship.

Meg Wolitzer, who wrote the novel on which the film is based, delved deeper into the interfaith aspect on the page. She says, “Joan’s mother is against her being with Joe for a number of reasons and one of them is he’s Jewish. There’s a strain of anti-Semitism going on from her that impels Joan toward Joe more and away from her mother. Making them different from each other creates a tension that brings them together.” The 2003 novel is being reissued as a tie-in with the film.

Editor’s note: Rachel Platten is not in an interfaith marriage as we previously thought. We will be removing her from this column. IS “Fight Song” singer Rachel Platten and her Jewish husband Kevin Lazan, who married in a Jewish ceremony in 2010, are expecting their first child.

“I am overwhelmed with love, joy and happiness about our baby. It’s a total miracle that I’m growing a human and my husband and I couldn’t be more thrilled. But, I have also had an incredibly difficult spring and summer with serious nausea, exhaustion, constant sickness and all the awful symptoms no one wants to really talk about when sharing the ‘perfect blessed journey’ of pregnancy,” Platten confided, in part, on Instagram. “With all the mystery and wonder around this, one thing that has been abundantly clear to me: this little unbelievable soul that I haven’t even met yet is going to be my biggest teacher in the world and I cannot wait to learn.”

Model Karlie Kloss is marrying into a well-known Orthodox Jewish family and has reportedly converted to Judaism in advance of the wedding. Kloss has been dating businessman Josh Kushner, brother of Jared Kushner (who is married to Ivanka Trump) for six years. He proposed over a romantic weekend getaway in upstate New York, and she posted her ecstatic response on Instagram. “I love you more than I have words to express. Josh, you’re my best friend and my soulmate. I can’t wait for forever together. Yes a million times over.”
