To Bris or Not to Bris
For new parents and particularly Jewish-interfaith couples, deciding whether or not to have a bris or baby naming can be a challenging dilemma. Join 18Doors, Rabbi Simone Schicker, and a mohel (the person who performs the circumcision) to learn about different welcoming ceremonies and rituals open to expectant parents, as well about the differences between a Jewish ritual bris and a circumcision performed in a hospital. Together, we’ll explore some of the reasons that couples may choose to forego ritual circumcision and discuss the different ways to honor other cultural backgrounds as you prepare to grow your family!
Meet Rabbi Simone Schicker
Rabbi Simone Schicker has been the spiritual leader of Temple B’nai Israel in Kalamazoo, Mich. since her ordination from HUC-JIR in Cincinnati, Ohio in 2018. She was born and raised in Houston, Texas and was raised in an interfaith family. She is excited for the opportunity to learn from colleagues and teachers on the topic of interfaith engagement, and to bring her learning to all those in and around Southwest Mich. Rabbi Schicker is active in interfaith work in Kalamazoo and was recognized for her work as Clergy of the Year by ISAAC.
Meet Molly Kazin Marshall
As Director of Community Engagement and Special Projects, it’s Molly’s passion to connect interfaith couples in her community to resources and tools unlocking aspects of Jewish culture and traditions. With a passion for food and drink, Molly enjoys visiting the numerous breweries in the Boston area, plus baking and cooking at home. Kugel is one of her favorite foods, and is one of the few ways she will tolerate raisins. She especially loves hearing her friends who have never had kugel try to pronounce the word.
